Frequently Asked Questions About Rome and Floyd County Habitat for Humanity

How are the partner families selected?
Families in need of decent shelter apply to local Habitat affiliates. The affiliate's family selection committee chooses homeowners based on their level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay the no-interest loan. Every affiliate follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing the families who receive Habitat houses.

How much does a Habitat house cost?
Throughout the world, the cost of houses varies from as little as $800 in some developing countries to an average of $46,600 in the United States. Habitat houses are affordable for low-income families because there is no profit included in the sale price and no interest charged on the mortgage. Mortgage length varies from 7 to 30 years.

How long does it take to receive a home?
The application process takes approximately 30-90 days. Once construction begins it may take anywhere from 12 to 36 months to complete the unit. Habitat is a long-term solution to a housing need; please contact our office for suggestions if you have an immediate housing need.

What choices can be made for a new home?
Depending on the site and type of home, homeowners may be able to choose from selected combinations of exterior and interior colors, floor coverings, counter tops and window coverings.

How does Habitat determine the number of bedrooms?
Generally the size of unit being built will be determined before the selection process has begun. Applicants will qualify for a home based on family size. Habitat assumes two children of the same sex per bedroom, regardless of age difference, unless there are documented medical reasons for separate bedrooms. Therefore, a family of four (two adults, two daughters) would qualify for a two bedroom. A family of four (two adults, one son and one daughter) would qualify for a three-bedroom unit.
